A.L Kennedy: We Are Attempting To Survive Our Time
Venue: Facebook
Time: 12pm
Tickets: Free

Writing on the Wall and The Big Book Weekend present Attempting To Survive Our Time, Costa Book of the Year winning author A.L. Kennedy’s new collection of wry, caustic and unsparing fiction, examining human relationships and their failures hosted by the UK’s first Professor of Short Fiction, Ailsa Cox; dive into the world of short story telling with these two masters of the art.

In the last decade, short stories have been gaining in significance and momentum. They’ve been written by “bigger names” and are being published by bigger publishing houses as well as scooping up some of the most prestigious prizes. Some say this is because in our crazy modern lives we want short intense bursts to reflect our experiences rather than full, perhaps drawn-out novels. It might also be that we can devour short fiction on our daily commutes – whatever the reason, short stories have been seeing a steady increase in their foothold in the publishing and writing industry.

A.L Kennedy is a Scottish short story writer who has been producing work for the last 30 years. Over the course of her career she has been awarded the Lannan Award, the Costa Book of the Year, The Heinrich Heine Preis, the Somerset Maugham Award and the John Llewellyn Rees Prize as well as being included on the Granta Best Young British Novelist list twice.

Ailsa Cox is Professor Emerita in Short Fiction at Edge Hill University. Her own fiction is published in various magazines and anthologies, most recently The Mechanics’ Institute Review and Confingo. She has also written critical essays on a number of contemporary British writers, including A. L. Kennedy. She is the founder of the Edge Hill Prize, the only UK prize for a published short-story collection. This event will take place on the VLF website, be sure to register here
