The Waterstones Children’s Laureate at Central Library

Not only is Chris Riddell an amazing cartoonist, he is also a natural born storyteller. Working two events in one day at WoW Fest, the first was held at Central Library for over 300 primary school children. The way in which he interacted with the pupils was incredible. For two hours, they were completely engaged with his stories and illustrations from his popular series, Goth Girl. He also told them the story of how he got published, drawing caricatures from people of his earlier life. He also mentioned how his daughter was also following in his footsteps of becoming an illustrator. He even drew Project Managers Ciarán Hodgers and Emma Hulme on her birthday!

The Oompa Loompa of Doom and the Brexit Elephant in the Room
This was the best title for an event in WoW history. Chris Riddell has drawn for the Economist, the Independent and the New Statesman amongst other publications. Throughout the evening, he went back through his cartoons he was most proud of, mentioning the stories behind each one, especially a hilarious story of a fish riding a bicycle.

The caricatures of political figures were hilarious and most timely too, nuanced portrayals of the people we see on TV every day. Chris Riddell's cartoons were intelligent, sophisticated and nuanced. The audience also had the chance to win free entry to WoW's last event of the year, Dave Randall in Conversation with Peter Hooton & After Party by drawing a few cartoons of their own. Overall, both events were enjoyable and Chris Riddell is a delightful and talented artist.
